PSA:
Every day, millions of children ride school buses to and from school and, their safety depends on YOU.
When a school bus has its stop arm out and lights flashing, it’s the law to stop—no matter which direction you’re coming from. Passing a stopped school bus isn’t just illegal; it’s dangerous and could be deadly.
Across New York State, NYAPT, school districts, and law enforcement are joining forces through Operation Safe Stop—a campaign dedicated to protecting our children and ensuring their safety. We urge all drivers to stay alert and follow school bus safety rules. Stopping for a school bus isn’t just about obeying the law—it’s about protecting the lives of our children and supporting the safety of our community.
Operation Safe Stop reminds us: there’s no room for shortcuts when it comes to safety. Stop for the bus—Every time. Every child. Every stop. Every day

This week, we proudly celebrate the dedicated members of the Watkins Glen Central School District Board of Education, a team of community leaders who volunteer their time, energy, and expertise to ensure every Lake Hawk has the opportunity to soar. Across New York State, school board members collectively oversee the education of more than 2.2 million students and manage over $86 billion in budgets. Our Watkins Glen board is part of that incredible network of service and stewardship. These nine individuals give countless hours to shaping the vision, mission, and future of our district while always putting students first. Thank you for your leadership and commitment to Watkins Glen CSD. You create a shared vision for student success, set direction and ensure accountability for high-quality outcomes, oversee budgets and resources with care and transparency, and foster a positive, supportive culture for staff, students, and families alike. Your commitment to public education and to our Watkins Glen community makes a lasting impact every single day. We are grateful for your service, your heart, and your unwavering belief in our students. Please join us in celebrating and thanking our Board of Education during School Board Recognition Week.

🚨 School Bus Stop-Arm Violations: A Serious Concern 🚨

In just the first 7 days of October, we’ve had 9 reported incidents of drivers illegally passing stopped school buses — 3 of them occurred last Friday alone.

Even more alarming: some of these violations came from behind the bus, meaning drivers are ignoring the extended stop arm and flashing red lights while children are loading or unloading. This is extremely dangerous and completely preventable.
📍 Reminder: When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, you must stop — from both directions. No exceptions.

📍 What the Law Says (NY VTL §1174):
When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, you must stop — from both directions, even on undivided roads. Children may be crossing the street.
⚖️ Penalties for Violations in New York:
1st offense: $250–$400 fine, 8 points on your license, possible jail time up to 30 days
2nd offense (within 3 years): $600–$750 fine, up to 180 days in jail
3rd or more (within 3 years): $750–$1,500 fine, license revocation, and higher insurance rates
Plus: A Driver Responsibility Assessment Fee of ~$450+ may apply

💛 Our children’s safety depends on your attention and responsibility.
Please slow down, stay alert, and obey the law.

📢 Help us raise awareness — share this message and remind others:
Red lights mean STOP.
Every time.
